Turbojets, which typically power supersonic aircraft, do not have air that bypasses the compressor but will still have a fan at the front of the engine.

One would expect small general aviation aircraft like the Cessna Skyhawk would have significantly different RPMs from large commercial aircraft like the Airbus A350. However, this may not necessarily be the case.

An analysis from Plane and Pilot Magazine indicates that the average RPM for a general aviation engine tends to sit at around 2500, right at the lower end of the typical range for turbofans. This analysis becomes even more fascinating when one compares the aforementioned Skyhawk and A350.

The Skyhawk operates using a Continental O-300 piston engine, which, according to Backcountry Pilot, traditionally maintains an RPM of around 2700. The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB is a modern and dynamic turbofan that powers the Airbus A350, and according to Plane Nerd, the engine typically has an RPM of roughly 2700 as well.

New engines on the market

A new concept that has recently hit the market challenges the traditional norms when it comes to engine RPM. Specifically, the Pratt & Whitney PW1000G is a new family of engines that capitalizes on geared turbofan (GTF) technology, by adding a new gearbox between the fan blade and the low-pressure compressor.

The new gearbox allows for different shafts to rotate in order to spin the compressor and the fan, allowing the engine to have two different RPM numbers. For the fan, the typical RPM is roughly around 3,200, with the compressor's RPM reaching as high as 10,000, according to Aviation Week.

The gearbox allows for the RPM of the compressor and the RPM of the fan to be fixed at a strict 3:1 ratio, which allows for a significant increase in fuel efficiency. However, such a complex engine will require significantly more maintenance, and when issues arise, as they have with the PW1000G, fixes can be slow and painstaking.
