Sweden prepares for worst case scenario

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has stated that he is prepared to place nuclear weapons on Swedish territory in times of war.

The Swedish parliament, a new member of NATO, is due to vote in June on a defence cooperation agreement with the US. Such an agreement would give the US access to Swedish military bases and allow the US to store equipment and weapons in the Scandinavian country.

In recent weeks, there have been increasing initiatives from peace groups calling on the government to put in writing in the agreement that Sweden will not allow the placement of nuclear weapons on its territory.

The government repeated that there was no need to specify this in writing, given the "broad consensus on nuclear weapons" in Sweden and a parliamentary decision banning the use of such weapons in the country in peacetime. Speaking on public Swedish radio, Prime Minister Kristersson said that in wartime this should be assessed very differently.
