This has raised serious questions about the future of theatrical releases in the post-lockdown streaming-dominated era. Strike action from writers and actors has also contributed to the problem. If the domestic box office catches a cold, it tends to spread worldwide, and analysts are predicting that the global box office is also set for a significant downturn in 2024.
However, this hasn't always been the case. Using domestic box office data going back to 1977, we've ranked the 30 most successful years for cinema and identified the standout movies that helped to define them.
