Set in the Canary archipelago, El Hierro is a destination of wild landscapes and unspoilt natural treasures. Discover it for yourself!
While Spain is renowned for its famous destinations such as Tenerife, El Hierro is often overlooked in favour of its more touristy neighbours. Yet this volcanic island in the Canaries has so much to offer from majestic cliffs and lush green forests to crystal-clear coves and natural pools. Let’s discover this unspoilt natural gem!
Want to explore the Canaries? Read more on the destination to better prepare for your journey:
El Hierro, an underrated treasure in the heart of the Canaries
El Hierro, also known as "Isla del Meridiano" (the Meridian Island), is a place where time seems to stop and nature and tradition coexist in harmony. Located in the south-west of the Canary archipelago, El Hierro is the smallest, least touristy and youngest island in the region. With its rock formations and magnificent bays, El Hierro offers an idyllic setting for those seeking tranquillity and scenic beauty.
Valverde, standing at an altitude of 660 metres, is a picturesque village surrounded by green valleys that gave it its name. Its sloping, narrow streets are home to an old church and restaurants where you can taste the local culinary specialities. As Valverde is the only capital of the Canaries not to be located by the sea, it offers its visitors a change of scenery.
When is the best time to visit El Hierro?
Thanks to its subtropical climate, El Hierro can easily be visited all year round. However, to make the most of your trip and discover the island’s charming spots, we recommend planning your stay between March and June, and September and November. During these periods, the climate is mild and temperatures are ideal, fluctuating between 20 and 25°C.
During the summer season, El Hierro also remains pleasant, but is a little busier. In winter, stronger winds can blow across the island, making conditions less favourable for swimming.
How to get to El Hierro?
The easiest way to reach this pearl of the Canaries is to make a stopover in Tenerife’s airport. Another option is to take a ferry from Los Cristianos in Tenerife to Puerto de la Estaca, El Hierro ‘s main port, located around 20 kilometres from the capital.
Once there, we suggest you hire a car so that you can explore the island's most emblematic sites on your own.
What to do in El Hierro?
Although intimate and hidden away, El Hierro is full of activities. Here are a few must-visit spots for an unforgettable stay.
Natural coves and pools
Among the island’s most beautiful seaside resorts is El Tamaduste, renowned for its white houses and its natural swimming pool. Nearby, the natural pool of La Caleta offers a peaceful setting, appreciated by families to relax after having explored the island. And for those who prefer hidden coves, head to Cala de Timijiraque, a beautiful beach with gentle waters and no current.
Geological wonders and panoramic views
El Hierro is home to geological treasures such as the Roque de Bonanza, an imposing 200-metre arch-shaped rock formation. This natural structure is a real emblem of the island and an ideal location for photographers and anyone looking for spectacular views. Further afield, the Las Playas Natural Monument, a quiet bay on the east coast, is a must-see for its impressive scenery.
The Parador de El Hierro, for dropping off your suitcases
Set between the sea and the mountains, the Parador de El Hierro is an exceptional place to stay or simply take a break. This hotel is the most famous on the island, and offers beautiful views of the sea from its terrace. Unintentionally, the Parador has become one of El Hierro’s main attractions.
