Sir Jim Ratcliffe plans a £2bn Old Trafford rebuild to make a 'northern Wembley'
The Jim Ratcliffe plans to turn Old Trafford into the Wembley of the north with a £2 billion rebuild. It's been less than 12 months since the British billionaire acquired a 27.7% minority stake in his childhood club and is already contemplating demolishing Old Trafford after 114 years. Make no mistake, a decision that big has huge risk, but get it right. Ratcliffe could be forever remembered as United States. Ratcliffe plans to use the same architects who designed the reconstruction of Wembley Stadium and his preferred option is to build a new 100,000 seater stadium on land owned by the club adjacent to Our Trafford. However, a freight terminal occupies this space, preventing these plans from moving forward. In a recent poll, 52% of the United fans expressed their support for a new stadium, but many just wanted to fix the famous leaky roof. But the price of fitting retractable roof would cost over £400 million, a price too high for the Glazers who have not made any significant changes to Our Trafford since 2005. So it looks like unless the land issue is resolved, it could be bye bye Old Trafford.
