NewsJapan: Mice Tails Crack the Code for Balance, Offering New Insights into Human Health
Japan - November 06, 2024 Scientists at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) have unveiled a surprising aspect of mouse anatomy that could have significant implications for understanding human neurodegenerative diseases. A study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology reveals how mice actively use their tails to maintain balance, much like a whip countering the motion of a fall. Dr. Salvatore Lacava, first author of the study, explains, "By observing how healthy mice use their tails, we can gain insights into balance mechanisms, which are essential for research into motor control disorders like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s." The research utilized an innovative setup with a tilting platform, high-speed cameras, and mathematical models to demonstrate that mice don't just rely on their tails as passive counterweights. When the ground beneath them moves, mice rapidly swing their tails in the opposite direction to generate angular momentum, thus preventing falls. This active tail-flicking is also employed on thin platforms to stabilize their movement. Professor Marylka Yoe Uusisaari, the study's senior author, highlights the significance, "Understanding the dynamic role of tails in balance not only enhances our basic biological knowledge but also improves our experimental models for human-related research." The study challenges traditional mouse balance tests and introduces a more nuanced assessment by tracking how well a mouse's body aligns over its feet during movement. This new model could set a higher standard for diagnosing early balance impairments in mice, mirroring potential early-stage symptoms in humans. Dr. Lacava hopes that "by refining our assessment tools, we can spot and treat balance issues in humans before they significantly impact mobility." This research not only sheds light on an underappreciated aspect of everyday animals but also provides a new lens through which to view the complexities of human neurological health. NewsChile: Chinese brands offer innovative solutions for Chile's health system
Chile - Recent AI-powered medical equipment imported from China is helping Chilean doctors achieve faster and more accurate diagnoses, reduce wait times and improve service delivery in a country grappling with a strained healthcare system. The average waiting time for a Chilean seeking medical attention in the national health system is 255 days. Using new technology and medical equipment developed by Chinese firms, hospitals can carry out high-quality examinations in less time, optimizing both hospital resources and the patient experience. Among the new Chinese-made solutions is a tomography device produced by Neusoft, based in Shenyang in northeast China’s Liaoning province. The use of AI technology in medical devices means faster analysis of the data obtained, streamlining clinical decision-making and improving the whole medical process. Another ultrasound scanner for pregnancy can significantly reduce the time required for a complete fetal morphological study. Apart from their technological and quality advantages, these devices are also more affordable than similar devices produced elsewhere. Thanks to trade and technology agreements between China and Chile, this medical collaboration is expected to expand, allowing for increasingly advanced solutions that benefit both healthcare professionals and patients. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Gina Sarmiento, equipment specialist, Neusoft (starting with shot 1/partially overlaid with shot 3): "It is a tomography device that can explore the internal part of the human body and obtain high-quality images to help doctors, radiologists and specialists make an accurate diagnosis for proper treatment of patients. For example, AI-based technology can position patients, optimize processes, and help doctors and radiologists provide faster and more accurate diagnoses." Angelica Telles, clinical applications manager, SonoScape Latin America: "It helps us to carry out a complete fetal morphological study of week 20, 24, more or less, in a fast and efficient way and without pressing any other button, just by tracking the baby. With this, it's more convenient and takes around 75 percent less time than before to carry out a complete morphological study. Anyone who understands this knows that saving more than 75 percent of this time is really significant, since it gives us the opportunity to see even more patients."; 6. Various of prenatal ultrasound examination in progress, screen showing fetal images; 7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Raul Guinez, president, Imaging Center, San Lorenzo Clinic (starting with shot 6): "Chinese technology is now approved and in some ways has exactly the same standards as those more traditional brands in the imaging field where we work. We see a very favorable price-quality ratio and, therefore, that makes us choose Chinese technology."; 8. Various of intelligent medical equipment on display; 9. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Alejandro Chinchon, commercial manager, Medical Market (starting with shot 8): "We could say that the view towards China has changed. China is currently at the forefront of medical technology. They are doing many incredible things. I think that at this moment the future is in China and it is becoming easier for our clients to understand that idea. China has done things very well. The companies we work with have really excellent professionals. Many of them are trained and able to speak Spanish and English, which allows them to clearly communicate the message of Chinese brands and help Chilean medical institutions use the products."; 10.
