Pint-sized skateboarder becomes world legend
Welcome back, Carl. I want to ask you, do you remember what you were doing when you were nine years old? Nine. I'm pretty sure I was blowing up letter boxes. Right? Just as I suspected. Well, I bet you weren't doing this. Second attempt. Set it up. Go 720. No hand down, too. She knows it. Oh my God, you can see your hands about to put go down and then she's like, no, I don't need them. There it is like that. Oh, such a good landing, that extraordinary. That is our newest champion Australian skateboarder, 9 year old Mia Kretzer. And she's just become the youngest X Games gold medalist in history. Mia and her mom and a twine join us now live from Los Angeles. Oh yeah, I can't believe it. And it's still sinking in for you. Yes, completely. Well, just talk to me about that feeling. And I mean, this is not easy stuff at 9:00 or any age. What was it like when you nailed it? I was so happy. It was all crazy. I definitely didn't think I'd be getting a gold medal at 9 years of age at X Games. I know. Hello. And for mum watching on the sidelines, I mean when you when you start this routine, I don't know how nervous I'd be as a parent. What was it like for you? I it was surreal. I just, I've cried so many tears in the last day. It was just, yeah, just so proud. She's put in so much hard work. It's yeah, it's taken a lot to get to where we to where we were. And she just took the opportunity and she did, she did amazing. So, I mean, talk to us. Talk to us about that hard work because you must be training so much. Me and and I obviously you're, you guys are a bit of a team and so encouraging and so proud. What's involved in getting to this level? It's been amazing, like being involved at this at this age, having this title for myself now, it's all crazy and just so happy for it all, you know, so grateful. You know, on, on on Sunday, I got a a message from my great mate Corbin Harris, who's one of the greatest skaters we've ever produced. And so Corby said to me, bro, this nine year old just won gold at the X. And for him to say it and for you to have achieved that at 9, did you like, you must have never even dreamed of that at 9 years of age. No, it was, yeah. It was just incredible how it all happened, the journey and the path. It all started with a, with a wild card to another competition. And we just, yeah, we just ran with it. And she did incredibly well at that, at Tony Hawk's third alert two weeks ago. And she gained entry into X Games and here she is now. So how hard does she train? You know, 'cause we all know it's often the, the parents who are driving to training and doing all the encouraging and packing all the snacks. Yeah, she's out there every day she goes to school and then we're doing the crazy pick up run from after school and we're doing the drive and the, the ramp where she trains is quite far from us. So it's a good kind of 3/4 hour session after school every night and, wow, patiently waiting brother and sister at home. So it's a lot. Well, it's paid off. It's taken a lot. Yeah. And. And what's next for you, Mayor, when you got eyes on the Olympics or the world is your oyster? I'm actually thinking of going to the 2028 Olympics for that, which I probably will be invited to. So I can't wait to see how I do then. Oh, well, we can't. Yeah. We're hoping. We're hoping that LA puts Verd in the Olympics. We're pushing for it for 28. Thank you, LA. Right. Yeah. Well, well, hopefully it's there, too. I mean, you'll be the ripe old age of veteran at, what, 13? Veteran at 13? I'm sure you'll get an invite. Mia, Congratulations. Look, just quickly before we go, is that one of those cool LA necklaces or, or is that your actual award around your neck there? Hey, next guys Champion. Well done, huh? Thank you. Thank you so much. Alright. Can't wait to see what you do next. Take care, gorgeous. Nice guys. Kids, get out there. Look what you can do. Yeah. Stop annoying your parents.
