From opulent and sleek to colourful and unique, these innovative spaces showcase the best in Australian design. Looking through the submissions from some of the country’s most creative designers and architects was truly inspiring.
We’re pleased to present our pick of the most gorgeous spaces, proudly sponsored by Winnings. These stunning rooms are our picks for this year’s Top 50 Rooms.
Best Kitchen: Madeleine Blanchfield Architects
Sponsored by AEG
+ Room of the Year Award
Sponsored by Winnings
Madeleine Blanchfield & Nick Channon
A single-storey rear pavilion extension with a generous ceiling height and skylight provided the ideal space for this standout open-plan kitchen with its layered yet balanced design. A sculptural, stepped island stands firmly centrestage, while timber joinery adds warmth below the concrete ceiling. “The final form, nestled in leafy surrounds, is a warm, open residence that embraces its modern essence,” says Madeleine.

Best Bathroom: Madeleine Blanchfield Architects

A calming oasis in an inner Sydney Victorian terrace, this bright ensuite features original fireplaces restored in Carrara marble, honouring the history of the home while complementing it with contemporary luxury additions. “The monolithic stone vanity is the centrepiece, drawing attention to its reflective pod, clad in mirror-polish stainless steel,” says Madeleine. Natural light floods in from windows on both sides, playing with reflective surfaces. This bathroom “evokes a sense of being inside a jewel box”, a treasured escape from city life.

Best Bedroom: Studio Prineas
Sponsored by Tongue & Groove
Eva-Marie Prineas
An artfully crafted pitched ceiling with a skylight welcoming in natural light is just one of the many appealing elements of this winning bedroom. A grounded palette of earthy tones, along with natural textures of linen, timber and wool, cocoons this parents’ retreat. “The main suite was to form an elevated sanctuary for rest and relaxation, overlooking the expansive garden and district views,” says Eva-Marie

Best Use of Colour: Kitty Lee Architecture
Sponsored by Dulux
+ Rising Star Award
Sponsored by Siemens
Kitty Lee
Reflecting the relaxed style and warmth of Marrakesh, the use of robust materials and pastel shades allows this home to shine. Kitty Lee injected light and functionality into a kitchen inspired by the owners’ colourful ceramics collection, tying the interiors to the pops of pink and sunny yellow outside. “My favourite feature is that the Mud Australia ceramics are framed by the arched opening and are even visible from the front door of the house,” says Kitty. “The room feels lived in, lively and fun.”

Best Use of Materials: Louise Walsh Interior Design
Sponsored by NEFF
Louise Walsh
A wine cellar that reflected the rustic feel of this northern NSW home was the goal. “The brief was for a climate-controlled room with space to enjoy weekends looking out to the views beyond,” says Louise. “The wine cellar needed to be functional, but at the same time not too fancy.” Floor-to-ceiling moody charcoal stucco forms backdrop to an aged-brass servery, while the natural textures and tones of stone cladding and dark stained timber flooring complete this winning materials selection.

Best Indoor-Outdoor Connection: Hugh-Jones Mackintosh
Sponsored by Vintec
Justine Hugh-Jones & Katrina Mackintosh
Drawing inspiration from the form of a palm frond, curved and straight lines weave through this elegant coastal home. Harbour views glimpsed through eucalypts merge with the interiors, thanks to walls of glazing and entertaining zones decorated with an organic palette. “You can see all the way through the house,” says Justine. “While the house celebrates the view, there’s so much to see along the way.” The transition from indoors to out, to the ocean and blues skies beyond, is flawless.

Best Use of Soft Furnishings: Kate Nixon
Sponsored by Myer, Australian House & Garden
Kate Nixon & Roberta Gallo
“The scheme is all about texture – it’s a big part of what makes the space feel like home,” says Kate of this Federation home on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Working with the existing carpet and white walls, it was essential that the furnishings enrich the interiors, their deep timbers and earthy tones reflecting the surrounding bushland and paying homage to the owners’ South African heritage. Bold pieces from the family’s art collection give the room its distinct character.

Best Laundry: Woods & Warner
Sponsored by Bosch
Sonia Warner & Jacinta Woods
The combination of colour, pattern and texture transforms this laundry into a standout space. Joinery in Resene Barnstorm complements the earthy tones of the mosaic splashback and the warmth of timber shelving. “The tartan floor tiles pick up on the granite benchtop tone and make heading into the laundry that little bit more fabulous,” says Sonia of the room, which includes both a pull-out drying rack and ironing board as well as a coat and boot station. The owner agrees. “I love my laundry. It certainly surpasses the standard white-on-white trend…”
