LNP candidate Bianca Stone concedes to Labor's Meaghan Scanlon in hotly contested Gold Coast seat

Television reporter turned state political candidate Bianca Stone has conceded defeat in the tightly contested Gold Coast seat of Gaven.

The LNP candidate has been in a close race against Labor's Meaghan Scanlon since Saturday's Queensland state election.

Fewer than 400 votes separate the pair with roughly 80 per cent of votes counted, but Ms Stone said she had called Ms Scanlon to concede defeat.

Ms Stone thanked voters for supporting her and changing government after nine years of Labor holding power.

"This was a hard-fought campaign, and I could not have done it without the support of my family, friends and volunteers," she said in a statement on social media.

"I take comfort in knowing we were all part of a team that changed the government.

"As for my future, right now, I'm looking forward to a couple of days off with my loved ones before diving into something new — whatever that may be."

Ms Stone declined to comment further.

The LNP campaigned hard in the seat with several sitting MPs pausing their own activities to help Ms Stone on the booths.

Labor yet to claim victory

A Queensland Labor Party spokesperson said Ms Stone's concession was welcome news.

But they said party scrutineers would continue to monitor the vote count.

"It's great news for Labor on the Gold Coast and great news for Meaghan," the spokesperson said.

"It's a real testament to the campaign she ran and the work she's done in the community."

If she wins the seat, it means Ms Scanlon will represent the seat of Gaven for a third term.

She has been the only state Labor representative on the Gold Coast since becoming the youngest woman elected to Queensland's parliament aged 24 in 2017.

That record was overtaken at the weekend by the LNP's Ariana Doolan, who was elected to the seat of Pumicestone in the Moreton Bay region aged 22.

The youngest person ever elected to a Queensland parliament was Lawrence Springborg at 21.

Stone 'incredibly gracious' in defeat

Speaking on the Gold Coast this afternoon, Ms Scanlon said Ms Stone had been "incredibly gracious" when she phoned her to concede the seat of Gaven.

"This has been a tough campaign and I have respect for anyone who puts their hand up to run in an election," she said.

"This is the community I grew up in and love, so it obviously is an incredible privilege to serve as an elected member of this area."

Ms Scanlon said she knew the seat was expected to come down to the wire.

"In 2017, I was elected on a very small margin," she said.

"We worked incredibly hard and so we always knew that this vote was going to come very, very close.

"I was elected as a then 24-year-old, and I'll continue to do that because I got into politics because I want to make a difference."

Gaven is the only Labor-held state seat on the Gold Coast.

"I think a lot of people spoke to me about the fact that the Labor government had been in for a considerable, considerable amount of time, and so no doubt that factored into the way some people voted," Ms Scanlon said.

"I think it's really important that there is, that there's diversity of opinions on the Gold Coast, and that it's not all just dominated by one side."

Scanlon backs Miles to continue as leader

Ms Scanlon said she supported Steven Miles's decision to stay on as the leader of the Queensland Labor Party.

"If Steven [Miles] wants to continue being the leader of our party, which I think he should do, then he would have my support to do that," she said.

"He has done an incredible job as the leader of the Labor Party to stand up for the things that matter, for the things that a lot of people really, really care about. "And he's done a really, really impressive job despite all of the odds."
