Worst over ever: Ashes villain smacked for record 43 runs
If you thought Queensland’s State of Origin team endured a horror outing on Wednesday night, spare a thought for England paceman Ollie Robinson who sent down an over that went for 43 runs.
Robinson, who featured heavily against Australia during last year’s Ashes series, has earned the unwanted record of bowling the worst over in first-class history during a County Championship division two match between Leicestershire and Sussex.
In the fourth innings of the match, with Leicestershire requiring 464 runs to win, Robinson had tidy figures of 1-22 from 12 overs before carnage unfolded at the hands of batsman Louis Kimber.
Robinson was hooked for six off the first ball of the over before a similar shot for four that was called a no-ball.
It didn’t get any better for Robinson as Kimber clubbed eight boundaries in eight balls, three of which were no-balls.
After a single off the final ball of the over, Robinson had leaked a staggering 43 runs from his over.
The over went as follows: 6, 4nb, 4, 6, 4, 4nb, 4, 4nb, 1.
However, no-balls in county cricket now carry a two-run penalty, instead of the usual one run.
Had Robinson’s over been in a Test match, it would have gone for 40 runs. Surprisingly, Robinson was given another over by his captain.
Nonetheless, it was the most expensive over in first-class history, surpassing Alex Tudor’s 38-run over in 1998 at the hands of Andrew Flintoff and another forgettable over this week.
England spinner Shoaib Bashir went for 38 runs off an over in a different championship match.
Playing for Worcestershire, Bashir was clubbed for five straight sixes by England teammate Dan Lawrence, who was playing for Surrey.
In the Robinson match, Kimber brought up triple figures off 62 balls before reaching a remarkable double century.
In a stunning run chase, Kimber was bowled by Australian fast bowler Nathan McAndrew for 243 off 127 balls. Leicestershire were bowled out for 445, 19 runs short of their target, after recovering from 7-175.
Robinson became public enemy No.1 among Australian fans last year when he gave an expletive-laden send-off to Usman Khawaja after he’d passed 100.
Former Australian batsman Matthew Hayden said at the time: “The other bloke [Robinson], he’s a forgettable cricketer. A fast bowler that is bowling 124km/h nude nuts, and he’s got a mouth from the south. Someone like him, you can just go: ‘Brother, I’m coming at ya’.”
