The Greatest Hard Sci-Fi Movies Ever, Ranked
Involving the adventurous discoveries of other worlds, aliens, technologies that may never exist, and more aliens, It's fair to say that some level of the fantastical is denoted in many sci-fi films, but many of what we might consider sci-fi films exist in the sub genre Hard sci-fi. A name referring to those science fiction films that did their best to learn more heavily into the science than, well, the fiction. Here are a few good examples of the hard sci-fi genre. Interstellar went above and beyond in several regards, along with being one of the most emotional films. Director Christopher Nolan has released there were difficult scientific problems to solve in the telling of the story. His brother Jonathan Nolan had been working on the script for four years while studying relativity at a university. During that time, astrophysicist Kip Thorne was collaborating with Linda OPS to create this now well known hard sci-fi story. And according to Christopher Nolan in an interview, their dream was to make a science fiction film where the more outlandish concepts were derived from real world science. 2001 A Space Odyssey was released in 2001, once we had already been to space and knew what it looked like, be there. Just kidding, it was actually released in 1968, one year before the moon landing. Or at least if you believe we've landed on the moon over time. 2001 A Space Odyssey has been at the center of a counter narrative to whether or not we landed on the moon. The argument is this, albeit kind of funny, that director Stanley Kubrick had revealed his ability to manufacture the appearance of being in outer space and using his techniques. It's thereby possible the public was tricked into thinking we landed on the moon with the use of some lights, cameras, and a little Hollywood magic. The point is, at least for its time, there was enough scientific realness in The Space Odyssey to unsettle the more skeptical members of our population. Other hard sci-fi films like Arrival delve into the power of language from a psychological perspective, and movies like her unpack the relationship between man and technology.
