Victoria Monét put her earnings from a publishing deal to good use, and it’s paying off.

For more than a decade, the “Alright” singer has put time and dedication into the entertainment industry.

As AFROTECH previously reported, the Atlanta, GA, native developed a knack for performing as a pre-teen at a dance camp. This early experience sparked her interest in songwriting and motivated her to move to Los Angeles, CA.

Since 2010, Monét has collaborated with prominent artists, putting pen to paper for talent such as Brandy Norwood (“Rather Be”), Chloe x Halle (“Do It”), and Ariana Grande (“Thank U, Next”), USA Today reports.

Investing Into Her Dreams

While creating hits for other artists, she was also in the process of cultivating her fanbase. At one point, she described herself as a “struggling songwriter,” but her early belief in success inspired her to invest more deeply into her craft. However, she encountered several learning curves, including vocal production and engineering.

“Songwriters aren’t paid day rates in the studio, but the engineers are and the vocal producers are. So, I started doing that, and I was able to really sustain. And then from there, keeping my songwriting skills sharp,” Monét explained during an interview shared on Visa’s YouTube channel.
Her formula worked and she landed a publishing deal that came with a large advance. Rather than splurging on a car or home, she says she invested the $150,000 to support her presence on tours with Fifth Harmony and later Ariana Grande — all without a management team.
“I didn’t have a hairstylist. I was doing my hair, doing my makeup. I brought my cousin on tour to take the photos and make sure that the footage got everywhere,” she said during a conversation with Visa CMO Frank Cooper. “I’m doing my own routing with my mother’s helpand rented a van so that we could travel. And that investment was opening forfirst Fifth Harmony, then Ariana Grande Day on her ‘Dangerous Woman Tour.’ No label, just making it happen.”
She added, “And I had to keep up with her tour dates and she’s touring for like six months. So, I took that money and made sure that I could sustain that. And I think it became a place where a lot of peoplediscovered who I am and just building on that fan base and slowly converting them into my world.”

Betting on her artistry from the start has made Monét a three-time Grammy Award winner in 2024, following the release of “Jaguar 2” on Aug. 25, 2023. The album notably featured the hit single “On My Mama.”

Now, she’s headlining “The Jaguar Tour” with stops in cities like Washington D.C., Houston, TX, Atlanta, GA, and Detroit, MI.

The tour will conclude on Nov. 15, 2024, in London, UK.
