Harry Potters Complete Family Tree, Explained
It's important to remember the ongoing controversial statements by the creator of the Harry Potter franchise. CBR supports the hard work of industry professionals on properties fans know and love and the wider world of Harry Potter that fans have adopted as their own. You can find CBR's continuing coverage on Rowling here .
The vast history of Harry Potter is seemingly unending, and the wizarding families of Britain are an endless source of intrigue for fans of the franchise. Generations upon generations of pure blood and Muggle-born wizards and witches created the great Wizarding World, but one family stood out after many centuries. The Potter family was not a part of the Sacred 28, as they shared their name with Muggle-borns, but its members had made significant contributions.
The Potters came starkly into the limelight with Lily and James' sacrifice the night Voldemort visited Godric's Hollow and left Harry Potter an orphan. However, Harry became the first person to survive the Killing Curse, inarguably making him the most famous boy in the whole world. While Harry may not have known family, he was descended from Ignotus Peverell and Linfred of Stinchcombe. Ignotus Peverell was the youngest brother and the Master of Death in The Tale of the Three Brothers in The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which was most likely why the Cloak of Invisibility was passed down through generations and ended up with Harry Potter. He was the earliest ancestor of the Potters.
Linfred of Stinchcombe Laid the Foundations
Linfred of Stinchcombe was a wizard from the 12th century who was known for helping his Muggle neighbors out with potions and cures for their illnesses. They did not know that Linfred's cures were of magical origins, and he was thought to be just an eccentric man. However, Linfred's experiments in his home led to some of the most important inventions in wizarding history, including complex potions like Skele-Gro and Pepperup Potion.
Quidditch in Harry Potter, Explained
The Wizarding World has many unique customs that require rules as well as games like Quidditch that thrive on a unique way to play.
These potions became popular quickly, and their sales brought in huge revenue. This was a chunk of what formed the Potter fortune that viewers saw in Gringotts. Linfred came to be known as the "Potterer" because of his experiments and activities, which eventually got distorted into the modern-day "Potter" last name.
Hardwin Potter and Iolanthe Peverell Joined the Peverells to the Potters
Linfred's eldest son, Hardwin, met beautiful Iolanthe in Godric's Hollow and got married. Iolanthe was the granddaughter of Ignotus Peverell from The Tales of Beedle The Bard, and since there were no male heirs in her family, she inherited her grandfather's famous Cloak of Invisibility. Not much is known about Hardwin and Iolanthe's life, but this tradition from the Peverells was assimilated into the Potter family quickly.
"The wizarding family of Potters descends from the twelfth-century wizard Linfred of Stinchcombe, a locally well-beloved and eccentric man, whose nickname, 'the Potterer,' became corrupted in time to 'Potter.'"
Who Gave Harry Potter The Cloak Of Invisibility?
The Cloak of Invisibility got Harry Potter out of a lot of sticky situations, but just how did he come by such a valuable magical artifact?
The Cloak was then secretly handed throughout the entire line to the eldest heir of every new generation. What is known is that the Potters kept working hard in each generation, adding to the massive wealth that Linfred had accumulated with his genius.
Henry Potter Stood Up For What Was Right
From 1913 to 1921, Henry Potter served in the Wizengamot during Archer Evermonde's reign as Minister of Magic. Henry was well-loved by his peers, who often called him Harry. In the Ministry, Henry took a stand against the Minister who had forbidden witches and wizards from fighting in the First World War with the Muggles.
10 Major Harry Potter Questions That Still Haven't Been Answered
The Harry Potter franchise is a massive world with many characters and stories that have led to countless questions that still haven't been answered.
Much bloodshed could have been avoided this way, which was why Henry made his pro-Muggle stance clear, even if it removed him from the good graces of the Minister. This friendliness with Muggles also got the Potter family excluded from the Sacred 28 list of important wizarding families.
Fleamont and Euphemia Potter Added to the Affluence of the Potter Family
Henry's son, Fleamont Potter, was Harry's grandfather and James' father. Much more is known about his life than the rest of the Potter ancestors. Fleamont attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry but was teased mercilessly for his name. Instead of wallowing in his torment, Fleamont decided to become a master dueller, which made him a less soft target for Hogwarts students.
"It was Fleamont who took the family gold and quadrupled it by creating magical Sleekeazy's Hair Potion ('two drops tames even the most bothersome barnet')."
However, Fleamont took to a career in Potion-making after he graduated, much like Linfred of Stinchcombe. He invented Sleekeazy's Hair Potion, which promised to contain frizzy and bushy hair in minutes. This Potion grew so popular that Fleamont managed to quadruple the Potter fortune with his entrepreneurship. He married Euphemia, who was a pure-blood witch. The couple had given up hope of having children in their lives, but Euphemia fell pregnant at a later age with James. James Potter was Fleamont and Euphemia's only son, but they also treated Sirius Black like their own child.
James and Lily Potter Were Tragically Lost to Mindless Cruelty
James was spoilt from the love he received at home, which was why he was a bit of a bully at Hogwarts. He had a complicated legacy, especially when it came to his treatment of young Severus Snape. However, James was not a bad person. He had the best interests of his friends at heart, and together, the Marauders played pranks and protected each other, even becoming Animagi to keep Remus Lupin company on his werewolf nights. He was a star Chaser for the Gryffindor team, and his Quidditch skills were passed on to his son. As James grew up, he became mature and accountable. He married Muggle-born witch Lily Evans straight out of Hogwarts, and the couple became a part of the Order of the Phoenix. At the height of the First Wizarding War, the Dark Lord sought to recruit the Potters to his cause. However, the couple turned him down thrice and became strong allies of the side that fought against Voldemort.
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies"
- Sybill Trelawney's prophecy
10 Sybill Trelawney Predictions That Came True in Harry Potter, Explained
In Harry Potter, Trelawney wasn't the most skilled professor, but many of her predictions were more spot-on than people assumed.
It was this defiance and Sybil Trelawney's prophecy that led Voldemort to target the Potters and, most importantly, their one-year-old son Harry, who was born in 1980. James and Lily were protected by the Fidelius Charm, but their secret keeper, Peter Pettigrew, betrayed them at the last moment. Caught unawares, James was killed instantly. Lily held herself in front of her son as Voldemort cast her down, too, which was the reason why she left an enduring protective spell on her son for as long as he lived. On this fateful night, Voldemort uttered Avada Kedavra, but Harry Potter did not die. Instead, Voldemort was vanquished himself for many, many years before he returned.
Harry and Ginny Potter Fought The Second Wizarding War Together
Harry was left an orphan after this tragic incident, and the only family he had left were the Dursleys. Petunia was Lily's sister, but she did not have any magic in her. This became a source of resentment and then hatred for Petunia, who never treated little Harry well. Dumbledore had left the baby in her care, but she only subjected him to abuse, neglect, and lies -- Harry did not know he was a wizard till the time Hagrid knocked down a cabin door in the middle of nowhere. At the age of eleven, and with no clue about his own importance in the Wizarding World, Harry entered Hogwarts and had countless adventures with Ron and Hermione. However, it was clear from the beginning that he was destined to bring down the Dark Lord with the help of experienced wizards like Albus Dumbledore.
"I am the chosen one. I have to kill him."

The Harry Potter Reboot Can Explain These Voldemort Mysteries
Harry Potter is known for its iconic villain, Voldemort, who could finally have his biggest mysteries explained in the upcoming series.
In the midst of chasing Horcruxes, fighting Voldemort's yearly machinations, and even finding his Godfather, Harry fell in love with Ginny Weasley, who was the sister of his best friend Ron Weasley. Ginny was a year younger than Harry, and they only got together in Harry's sixth year. They understood each other innately and after the final defeat of Lord Voldemort in the Battle of Hogwarts, Ginny and Harry built a beautiful life for themselves. Harry went on to become an Auror at the Ministry of Magic, and Ginny became a Quidditch star. Together, they had three children: James Sirius Potter, Albus Severus Potter, and Lily Luna Potter.
