FromSoftware Boss Comments on Future Collabs After George R.R. Martin

FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has remarked on the possibility of future writing collaborations in the same vein as the studio's work with George R.R. Martin on Elden Ring, stating that he would be open to such prospects. The Game of Thrones creator helped the studio pen its biggest game to date, Elden Ring, which also went on to be FromSoftware's most successful game ever.

Although it was an unprecedented move for the renowned writer to be attached to a video game, George R.R. Martin's involvement in Elden Ring wasn't as large as some may believe. Martin played a crucial role in building the foundation of the game's lore, but the writing baton was then passed over to FromSoftware and director Hidetaka Miyazaki, who finished the rest of the script. However, the building blocks that Martin laid out for Elden Ring were so immense the studio could only use a smaller chunk for the game, with the rest of it apparently being stowed away for the future.

Earlier in the year, Miyazaki confirmed that Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC draws from Martin's established lore, contrary to notions at the time that suggested FromSoftware may have brought the writer back for the expansion. However, Miyazaki isn't opposed to the idea of collaborating with Martin or other major creators again. Speaking recently with Gamespot, the FromSoftware chief praised Martin's contributions to Elden Ring, stating that he was a "huge value-add" to the project and that "unpacking his lore and his mythology" was very creatively stimulating for the team.

When asked about whether FromSoftware would consider teaming up with similarly renowned creators in the future, Miyazaki remarked that he would "definitely be open to exploring that," as Martin's involvement with Elden Ring was a novelty among other FromSoftware titles, as well as a unique experience for both the developers and the players. Miyazaki also revealed that Martin had a surprisingly good understanding of "game design and video games in general," which helped expedite Elden Ring's development and allowed for a "very seamless" collaboration.

The unison between Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin for Elden Ring will no doubt be remembered as one of the greatest in the games industry, resulting in one of the most successful and critically-acclaimed action-RPGs ever made. While Elden Ringmay not be Miyazaki's ideal fantasy RPG, the award-winning auteur is seemingly intent on helming more games in the future. Whether it's by himself or a collaborative effort with another eminent creator, though, remains to be seen.
