Major supermarket to rival Aldi by slashing prices of 222 products in 'little' stores
So far, Aldi has been the cheapest supermarketevery month in 2024 according to consumer experts at Which?.
But now it seems another major supermarket is gunning for the crown, as Tesco is slashing the price of 222 everyday products at its ‘little’ stores.
The retail giant said the reduction on its ‘household essentials’ which include products like milk, eggs and rice, will reduce costs by an average of 10%.
The change comes less two weeks after Sainsbury’s also extended their Aldi Price Match promise into its 1,400 convenience stores nationwide, making it the first major supermarket to do so.
Tesco was actually the first the introduce Aldi price matching in its larger stores but this did not initially included their Express shops.
It’s brilliant news for shoppers after Circana, a consumer behaviour company, found customers are currently paying an average of 10% more for the same item in convenience stores than main supermarkets.
Which? has also long campaigned on the issue of price disparity, finding that shopping at a convenience store versus a supermarketcould tack on an extra £800 to your food bill for the year.
Affordable Aldi price-matched goods you’ll be able to find in your Tesco Express stores include:
- Tesco Cream of Tomato Soup: Was 70p, now 62p.
- Tesco Pene Pasta Quills 500g: Was 85p, now 69p.
- Tesco British Semi-Skimmed Milk 4 pints: Was £1.55, now £1.45.
- Warburtons White Slice Sandwich Rolls 6 pack: Was £1.30, now £1.20.
- Domestos Original Bleach 750ml: Was £1.30, now £1.19.
CEO Kevin Murphy said: ‘[The] round of price cuts on more than 200 lines in our Express stores underlines our commitment to offering great value to Tesco customers.
‘Whether you are picking up coffee and milk for the office or a loaf of bread and a tin of soup on the way home, our Express stores offer both convenience and great value.’
Despite the new price-match in little stores, it will take a lot to sway Aldi’s army of loyal customers.
Aldi has also held the title of the UK’s favourite supermarketsince July 2023 with other supermarkets striving to match its success and low prices.
