Henry Cavill's Highlander Reboot Gets a Major Filming Update
A new update has been revealed for the upcoming Highlander reboot. Starring Henry Cavill in the lead role, the movie is set to start filming in early 2025.
Chad Stahelski, who has helmed each installment of the John Wick movie series, will direct the new take on Highlander. While speaking with Collider, Stahelski revealed how the production is gearing up to start in January, coinciding with a previous suggestion that the movie would start filming within a year. The director went on to confirm that the film will shoot in Scotland.
Highlander Almost Caused Sean Connery to Lose His Head... Literally
Reminiscing about his 1986 cult classic, original Highlander director Russell Mulcahy explains how Sean Connery nearly lost his head in a sword fight.
"We start shooting in January in Scotland, that's why I go right after I leave. I go to Scotland on Monday to do the final location scout," Stahelski said.
Chad Stahelski Shares His Concerns Over the New Highlander
Stahelski also commented on how this project will be different in many ways compared to the John Wick films, including a switch to focusing on sword fighting over gunfights. The director acknowledged how it will be a challenge to work with swords, particularly with regard to keeping the cast and crew safe on the set. He's also concerned about finding the right balance with the sword figthing and the other elements of the film.
The Highlander Reboot Should Be An Anthology TV Series
The Highlander franchise is finally receiving a movie reboot, but an anthology TV series may serve the franchise much better.
"Swords, to me, are of one of the trickiest things to do in fight scenes, because if I mess up too much with the firearm, the muzzle flashes are digital," Stahelski explained. "So we don't have to worry about hurting anyone. When we do car stuff, that's also a big concern. But there's ways now, cables that take some of the hazards out for the cast... Swords, it's a little trickier because now I got to trust that my actors are swinging this piece of metal at each other, and hopefully not gonna take their eyes out or stab somebody. Every sword movie, somebody gets poked or hit on the head or something like that. It takes a little bit more skill and a little bit more dedication. So that's always a concern."

He added, "Sometimes a three-minute sword fight can be a little boring. So I'm more worried about,‘Am I going to bore you with a movie about sword fighting?’And how do I sprinkle in firearms, and martial arts, and car chases, and what's the story part of things? I have to get all that as well."
As of now, the new version of Highlander does not yet have a release date, but is reportedly aiming for a 2026 arrival.
