Usher Encourages Son Naviyd to 'Be Great' as 15-Year-Old Hopes to Start His Own Singing Career
"I offer the best to you, and I went through hell to be able to make certain that you could have an incredible start," Usher shared in his speech
Usher took a moment in the spotlight to honor someone very close to him.
During the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Celebration on Thursday, June 27, at the London West Hollywood, the "Yeah!" hitmaker took home the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Voice of the Culture Award.
During his acceptance speech, Usher, 45, gave his 15-year-old sonNaviyd Raymond, who wants to be a singer himself, a special shoutout.
Usher said that he was thrilled that Naviyd and another one of his sons, Usher "Cinco" Raymond were able to see him accept the prestigious award, and "to be encouraged by the village of people who make this industry what it is, as well as incredible songwriters, producers, and creators."

He noted that one of his sons in attendance is "really adamant about being an artist," and that while he wants his son to be prepared for greatness, he also wants him to think about the "humble beginnings that we've had."
"When we play in an industry where many times genres that have fed many other genres... it's a backseat," Usher continued.
"So if anything, I'm encouraging him to understand that the entitlement of being able to start on that line, to start his journey is one that may potentially come with judgment because there's some comparison, but you know what?"
The eight-time Grammy winner then addressed Naviyd, encouraging him to "be great."

Usher also made sure to give his son Usher a shout-out as well. "And obviously, it's very difficult for the guy who was named after me, Usher," he said, referring to the 16-year-old. "But Cinco, I love you too, man. I'm so happy that you're here."
