Pro Bowl QB set to make less money than Bobby Bonilla this season

Pro Bowl QB set to make less money than Bobby Bonilla this season San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

Quarterback Brock Purdy is 24 years old, made his first Pro Bowl last season, led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl LVIII berth and arguably hasn't reached his prime yet.

Six-time All-Star outfielder and corner infielder Bobby Bonilla is 61 years old, and it's been almost 23 years since his final MLB game on Oct. 7, 2001.

As MLB, the New York Mets and all baseball fans commemorate the unofficial holiday known as "Bobby Bonilla Day" on Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter pointed out that the 1997 World Series champion is set to make more money in one day than Purdy will for the entire 2024 campaign.

Every year on July 1, the Mets are laughed at for still owing Bonilla $1.193M. New York, however, isn't alone in being stuck paying a former player on a deferred money deal.

Purdy, meanwhile, is entering his third NFL season in the fall.

After being selected with the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Iowa State product had a shocking run at the end of that season that earned him the nickname "Mr. Relevant."

Purdy then led the league in passer rating (113.0) and yards gained per pass attempt (9.6) during the 2023 campaign, among other categories, while making his first Pro Bowl. Purdy also finished third in touchdown passes (31) and fifth in passing yards (4,280) while tossing just 11 interceptions across 16 games.

He also helped lead the Niners to a Super Bowl appearance against the Kansas City Chiefs and ended the playoffs with a 61.1 completion percentage for 774 passing yards, three touchdowns, one interception and an 88.3 passer rating.

Only one year after suffering a UCL tear in his right elbow during the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Purdy not only led the 49ers to a Super Bowl berth but finished sixth in the AP Comeback Player of the Year voting as well.

He was sixth in the AP Offensive Player of the Year voting and was in the MVP conversation for much of the campaign, finishing in fourth place.

Purdy will surely be getting a much heftier payday soon.
