Examined: The 5 Largest US Airports That Are Not Legacy Airline Hubs
When we think about America's largest and busiest airports, it's easy to picture the massive hubs for legacy airlines like American, Delta, and United. But did you know that some of the largest airports in the US don't actually serve as hubs for these big names? Today, we're diving into the top five largest US airports that operate without the backing of a legacy airline hub. These airports are impressive for their size, traffic and connections, all without the need for Delta, United or American to dominate their gates. First on our list is Orlando International Airport, a true hub for tourists flocking to theme parks, Orlando serves millions without the help of legacy carriers. Instead, low cost airlines like Southwest, Spirit and Frontier dominate here, catering to the constant flow of leisure travelers. But why no legacy hub? Simply put, Orlando's primary traffic is vacationers, which doesn't fit the business model of legacy airlines focused on business travelers. Next we have Las Vegas's Harry Reid International Airport, another bustling leisure hotspot. Las Vegas sees bases from Southwest, Allegiant and Spirit, but again, major airlines like Delta and United haven't set up shop. However, with the city's growing business scene, could we see a change? Then there's Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport, rapidly growing as South Florida becomes a business center. This airport sees millions of travelers yet serves as a base mainly for JetBlue and Spirit. Fort Lauderdale may be on the rise, but will it draw the interest of legacy carriers? 4th on our list is Baltimore 1 Washington International, which despite its size, doesn't have a legacy hub. Southwest calls BWI home, and international flights even connect to Europe, but it's still outside the orbit of America's largest airlines. Finally, San Diego International Airport rounds out our list, those smaller than LAX. It serves major domestic and international roads. As San Diego's economy grows, we might see legacy carriers expand here. So which of these five airports do you think has the best chance of attracting a legacy airline hub in the future? Let us know your thoughts.
