‘House of the Dragon' Had a Literal Daenerys Targaryen Easter Egg in Episode 3

It's not often a show's Easter Egg is an actual egg, let alone three of them.

But that's just what HBO's House of the Dragon had during the second season's third episode, "The Burning Mill," on Sunday night.

In the scene, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) sends Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell) off to the Vale, and afterwards she's supposed to journey across the Narrow Sea to Pentos. Rhaenyra also gives Rhaena four dragon eggs to take to Pentos for safekeeping. In the Game of Thrones pilot, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) is presented with a trio of petrified dragon eggs as a wedding gift in Pentos. Three of the eggs in the Dragon scene are gold, green and black, just like Dany's.

Fans naturally wondered: Are three of those eggs that Rhaena is shuttling the same ones Dany was given? The same eggs which hatched into a trio dragons, the dragons which both helped Dany conquer Westeros, and also led to her downfall?

Turns out, yes.

The episode's director, Geeta Vasant Patel, told Mashable: "Those are Daenerys' eggs. All of us who work on this show are big Game of Thronesfans, so it was very exciting to shoot that scene."

Given that there's four eggs, one might assume that one of the eggs will eventually hatch into Rhaena's dragon, but that's speculation.

In a Screen Rantinterview, Patel also weighed in on that surprising scene where Rhaenyra sneaks back into King's Landing to have a secret meeting with Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke). She notes that Rhaenyra wasn't actually there to try and make a deal with Alicent.

"Rhaenyra was there to ask, ‘Did my father love me? Did he lie to me?," she said. "And that's what that moment's about … You realize that there is going to be a war because neither of them is willing to compromise. I think there's something really profound that's happening with Rhaenyra, because she is someone who in the past has compromised. But in this moment, I believe - and this is me as a fan - there's an ego rising in her."

House of the Dragon airs Sundays on HBO.
