Map shows Arctic blast will bring record-breaking cold weather to US states
The Arctic blast could break cold-weather records from Washington State to the Gulf Coast, a new map shows. The cold air is plunging into the US and will reach the South by this weekend. Temperatures could fall below freezing for several days in a row.
The cold weather could break several daily cold records across the US. Daily records for mid-January could be broken from Washington state to the Gulf Coast.
Dangerously cold wind chills are also expected, especially in the Northern Plains and Rockies. Forecasters expect the Arctic blast to hit in two rounds.
The first plunge of cold air is now pushing southward in the Plains. Wind chills as low as minus 61 degrees were measured on Friday morning in Cut Bank, Montana.
Jonathan Erdman, a senior meteorologist at The Weather Channel, said: "Daily records - coldest for the calendar day - are possible from Washington to Wyoming this weekend, then in parts of the Central and Southern Plains, particularly Monday and Tuesday.
"Among the notables, Chicago's O'Hare Airport could plunge to the minus teens for the first time since the January 2019 cold outbreak, and could fail to rise above zero during the day Monday and/or Tuesday. Oklahoma City could plunge below zero for the first time since the historic February 2021 cold outbreak.
"That said, we don't expect this outbreak to match the ferocity of either the January 2019 or February 2021 outbreaks."
Strong winds will also accompany theArctic blast, bringing dangerous wind chills to the Rockies, Plains and Midwest.
The Arctic blast is caused by high pressure near Greenland and the Canadian Arctic forcing cold air into the US., a common pattern for outbreaks in winter.
That cold air will be kept at low temperatures by snow across the US at the coldest time of year. The cold weather could remain until the last week of January.

Spring is a time for budding flowers, tender green leaves and baby animals. But 66 million years ago, that gentle season instead brought mass death and carnage from Earth's catastrophic impact with a massive space rock. Scientists recently pinpointed the season of the disaster and linked it to springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, after analyzing fossilized animals that died minutes after the impact at a site called Tanis, where a river once flowed through what is now North Dakota.
