Kinohimitsu and Watsons Malaysia join forces to combat diabetes
Kinohimitsu has collaborated with Watsons Malaysia to spearhead a diabetes care initiative in conjunction with Diabetes Awareness Month this November.
The campaign's official launch kicked off on Nov 15 at The Exchange 106 TRX, focusing on raising awareness about the growing prevalence of diabetes in Malaysia.
Kinohimitsu Group’s chief operating officer, Jennifer Chin expressed pride in the collaboration, emphasising that partnering with Watsons Malaysia reflects their shared commitment to enhancing community health.
“Despite the frighteningly high prevalence of diabetes in Malaysia, many individuals remain dangerously unaware of their susceptibility to the disease.
“We are truly grateful towards Watson’s Malaysia for lending their extensive network of outlets to offer free health screenings. This expansive platform will certainly be a catalyst in our efforts to spread education and awareness within communities,” she said.
As part of the initiative, free blood glucose screening tests will be provided to the public, stressing the commitment of both brands to community health.
Diabetes - a growing health crisis
In line with its commitment to diabetes education and prevention, Kinohimitsu is introducing its latest product, WellSure SugaBalance (Diabetics Formula), as part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness about the condition.
The brand is also offering valuable insights through educational sessions led by its pharmacist and dietitian, aimed at guiding the public on lifestyle changes to manage diabetes.
With 95 per cent of diabetes cases in Malaysia being type 2, lifestyle modifications and preventive strategies are crucial to combat the rising health crisis. In response to this, the government has introduced several measures to tackle diabetes and excessive sugar consumption.
The Health Ministry (MOH) also launched the Advocacy Plan in November 2023, which included raising taxes on sugar and sugary drinks to curb sugar intake. In addition, the 2024 Budget proposed further increasing the excise duty on sugary drinks from 40 sen to 50 sen per litre.
The National Plan of Action for Nutrition of Malaysia III (NPANM III), introduced in 2016, provides a comprehensive framework to promote healthy eating and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes.
Beyond the health sector, other government agencies are also involved in the fight against diabetes.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) has partnered with the MOH on initiatives like the “Jom Kosong” campaign, which encourages healthier eating habits and aims to reduce sugar consumption across the population.
Chin also applauded the Government’s recent initiatives, such as the Advocacy Plan by the MOH to curb sugar consumption, calling them crucial steps in addressing the root causes of diabetes.
“We here at Kinohimitsu are committed to supporting these efforts and working together with the people to instil the importance of early detection and timely intervention to combat this disease.
“By combining education, awareness and proactive measures, we can empower Malaysians to make informed choices in their journey towards leading healthier lives,’ she said.
United against diabetes: a collective responsibility
The event held at Arena Watsons, The Exchange 106 TRX contributes and strengthens the ongoing collective effort to raise awareness and educate the public on diabetes prevention and management.
Through expert sharing, free health screenings (available at 96 Watsons pharmacies), and product demonstrations, attendees stand to gain valuable insights on adopting healthier lifestyles, as well as the benefits of incorporating dietary supplements into daily routines to support blood sugar control and overall well-being.
Watsons, Health and Beauty Asia, chief operating officer, Caryn Loh also emphasised in conjunction with World Diabetes Day, the company is thrilled to partner with Kinohimitsu on this special initiative to raise awareness about diabetes and encourage proactive health screenings.
“By providing free glucose tests at 96 Watsons outlets nationwide, we aim to empower Malaysians to take control of their health.
“Our collective mission is to prevent diabetes on a larger scale, focusing on early detection and timely intervention, essential steps in managing this chronic condition,” she said.
WellSure SugaBalance, a partner in diabetes management
The event also marked the launch of Kinohimitsu’s latest innovation, WellSure SugaBalance, a plant-based nutrition formula designed to help individuals with diabetes manage their blood glucose levels.
This complete meal replacement contains 28 essential vitamins and minerals, along with a proprietary blend of four plant-based protein sources and four fat blends rich in Omega-3, 6, and 9.
WellSure SugaBalance features several key components aimed at regulating blood sugar levels. It includes slow-release carbohydrates like Isomaltulose and Inositol, which are digested slowly to provide a gradual release of glucose into the bloodstream, helping to maintain stable blood sugar levels and prevent spikes after meals.
The Bitter Melon and Mulberry Extract are included for their potential to improve insulin sensitivity. The product also boasts a low glycemic index (GI) formulation, which helps control glucose levels, boosts energy, promotes satiety, and supports weight management.
Additionally, the formula offers a balanced ratio of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats to provide a complete meal while encouraging fullness.
This gluten-free, lactose-free, and preservative-free formula is designed to support a healthy lifestyle for individuals with diabetes, especially when paired with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
During the event, Kinohimitsu’s resident dietitian demonstrated how easy it is to prepare a nutritious meal using the product, simply mixing four scoops of powder with 200ml of lukewarm water, stirring or shaking until dissolved, and ready to enjoy.
The fight against diabetes requires a multi-faceted approach. By taking small but impactful steps like regular health screenings, healthier eating, and incorporating the right supplements, we can reduce the risks of diabetes and live healthier lives.
