Janella Salvador Shares A 'Girl Crush' Inspired Her 'Hey, You' MV
Talking about crushes can often make us feel a bit self-conscious or shy, especially when we talk about them openly: it's the *kiligfactor* at work. Recently, Janella Salvador openly shared that she's had a girl crush in the past—and in this case, art (somewhat) imitates life!
The multihyphenate revealed that her latest music video, "Hey, You," draws inspiration directly from her own life story. She personally pushed for the concept, driven by her desire to explore a "Girls' Love" (GL) theme alongside her Darna co-star, Jane De Leon.
"Di mabubuhay 'yung music video [if I hadn't had a girl crush]... Since it was my concept, I wanted it to be as personal as possible," the actress shared in an interview with Yes FM Manila.
She pointed out that the music video includes many personal references, like the fact that she came from an all-girls school. "I think in this day and age...love is love. Love is for everybody. You can love whoever you wanna love, you can be attracted to whoever you wanna be attracted to."
"The song isn't actually really Girls Love...It turned gay because of me!" Janella clarified in a separate interview with Easy Rock's Plugged In.
"Jane and I have been wanting a GL for the longest time so after I recorded this song, there was this day when I just thought, 'What if we turn this into the GL that we've been waiting for? I'm so tired of waiting, I'll just make it happen this time," she later on explained.
ICYMI, Jane and Janella starred as Darna and Valentina respectively in the latest TV show remake of the classic Filipino series Darna. Instead of pitting the two characters against each other (as the show intended), fans began to support the duo thanks to their explosive onscreen chemistry. This resulted in two dedicated fanbases: DarLentina and JaneNella supporters.
During the Love Laban 2 Everyone PH Pride Festival, Janella made a remark that ignited enthusiastic support from both #DarLentina and #JaneNella supporters.
"Sayang, hindi natuloy yung kiss," Janella remarked during the event. "Bigyan niyo muna kami ng GL."
According to Janella, she and Jane kept their friendship and "didn't lose contact whatsoever" even after Darna finished filming. "We were supposed to have a GL na, and then it didn't push through, basically. And so this is my way of being like, "C'mon!"" she told Easy Rock.
