Ken Chan breaks silence following charges of syndicated estafa
Ken Chan has broken his silence a week after authorities failed to serve him with a warrant of arrest for charges of syndicated estafa.
In a statement on Instagram on Thursday, the actor explained that his business, Café Claus, had three branches but these failed and closed down.
"Hindi po ako nanloko ng tao, naitayo po ang negosyo ngunit hindi ito nagtagumpay," he said.
Last Friday, police took to Ken's home in Quezon City to attempt to serve him with a warrant of arrest in relation to an alleged investment scam, but he was not at home.
Atty. Joseph Noel Estrada and Atty. Maverick Romero of Estrada & Aquino Law Office, who represented the complainant, said then that Ken and seven co-accused are facing charges of syndicated estafa.
Per Estrada, Chan convinced his client to invest in an alleged restaurant business to receive a 10% monthly interest. He also said that Ken and his group solicited about P14 million from his client.
In Ken's statement, however, the actor denied the allegations against him.
"Hindi po ako nanghingi lang ng pera at nanloko tulad ng akusasyon sa akin. Nalugi po ang Café Claus at isa sa malaking dahilan na rin ay dahil sa ilang business partners naming na nagplano para pabagsakin ang kumpanya at patuloy na sirain ang aking pangalan," he said.
According to Ken, he will release more details in the proper time about why the business failed. He explained that he chose to keep silent for the meantime because he is already addressing the issue through the legal process.
He also underscored that he is not running away from the charges against him.
"Lumalaban po ako at hindi tumatakbo palayo sa isinampang kaso sa akin. Mahigit isang dekada kong pinaghirapan ang aking career at hindi dahil sa akusasyon ng iilan ang magtatapos ng napakagandang future na inilaan para sa akin ng Panginoon," he said.
Ken then thanked his supporters and asked for prayers.
Police first attempted to serve Ken with a warrant of arrest in September, but the actor was also nowhere to be found at the time.
Under Article 315 of the Revised Penal Code, syndicated estafa is non-bailable and punishable with lifetime imprisonment.
