Wood stands out as a popular option for its durability, aesthetic appeal, and for the sophisticated touch it brings to any space.

However, working with wood has its challenges. It demands thorough research, appropriate treatment, and, ideally, guidance from professionals to get a desirable outcome.

"It’s very important to note that wood is an organic material. It breathes or moves in sync with the climate. This is why people will sometimes notice that wooden doors tighten during certain months of the year," share the professionals from Emerging Architects Studio (EASt).

EASt is behind one of the impressive homes featured on the Real Living website—an old bungalow transformed into a two-storey home.

To complete this project, they used Tanguile (Philippine Mahogany) and collaborated with local woodworkers.

TIPS FOR USING WOOD IN PROJECTS

For those who are interested in incorporating wood into their homes, here are insights from EASt’s previous projects:

1. Go for kiln-dried wood.

According to EASt, when sourcing wood, it's crucial to select kiln-dried varieties with low moisture content to minimize the risk of warping after installation.

Each type of wood has its advantages and disadvantages; however, EASt has used Tanguile, Narra, and Mahogany in previous projects, all of which are well-known among local woodworkers.

EASt emphasizes that Tanguile is often referred to as Philippine Mahogany, so it's essential to ensure you're selecting the correct type.

Moreover, among these options, Mahogany is the most affordable, while Narra tends to be the priciest.

EASt typically recommends Tanguile to their clients due to its versatility in applications like door frames, furniture, and stair treads.

Additionally, Tanguile exhibits less movement compared to Mahogany.

But, if your budget allows it, Narra can be an excellent choice for crafting furniture, door frames, and solid doors. Plus, it’s also suitable for flooring, wall panels, and ceiling treatments.

However, according to EASt, Narra can be quite hard to source and costly.

Teak is another option for interiors, but it, too, comes with a higher price tag and is often imported.

2. Repurpose salvaged wood.

Salvaged wood should not be overlooked, as it offers versatility for various applications within the home, whether as flooring, wall coverings, or decorative elements.

The designers from EASt advocate for the use of old, salvaged wood, highlighting its ability to infuse a project with character and depth.

They note that salvaged wood tends to be drier and more compact, contributing to a reduced environmental footprint.

This approach not only adds sentimental value, but also presents a smart solution for budget-conscious homeowners.

3. Source for wood from Taytay, Rizal

Taytay, Rizal is one of the nearest sources of wood if you’re coming from Manila.

You can find salvaged wood there, with several warehouses and yards offering old Meralco wooden posts, doors, windows, and other items that can be repurposed for your home.

4. Be careful when sourcing and acquiring legal wood

The professionals at EASt clarify that the legality of timber or forest products can be confirmed through a government-issued certification or license held by the individual, corporation, or association selling the materials.

It states that sellers are required to present legal documentation demonstrating their authority to cut, gather, collect, remove, transport, possess, and sell these products.

Timber and forest products encompass various types of timber, including those with a diameter of 150 mm and a length of 1,500 mm, as well as pulpwood, firewood, and premium hardwoods. like Narra, Molave, Kamagong, Opil, and Acacia, regardless of whether they originate from public or private lands.

It’s also important to note that certain products, such as firewood, pulpwood, and timber sourced from Ipil-ipil, do not require permits or licenses.

5. Proper treatment is key to get that lasting polished look

In a project featured on Real Living, a staircase underwent multiple reinstallations because of inadequate wood treatment.

Proper treatment is crucial to prevent infestations by wood-boring insects.

According to the architects, "Once wood is installed, proper protective top coating should be applied to ensure that it is well-protected from the elements."

They recommend using reputable brands, such as Sadolin and Protego, both of which are widely recognized for their effectiveness in wood protection.

6. Consult with a local carpenter or artisan

To guarantee the purchase of quality wood, it is advisable to consult with a local woodworker, carpenter, or craftsman.

Ask them if they can accompany you during sourcing and purchasing, too.

"In our opinion, nothing beats their insights and the years of experience they have working with wood," the EASt team shares.

Overall, incorporating wood into your home design can create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

By selecting the right type of wood and ensuring proper treatment and sourcing, you can enhance both the beauty and longevity of your space.

With thoughtful choices, wood can be a sustainable and stylish addition to any home.
