Bell MX-9: MIPS-equipped off-road helmet

MASTERING motorcycle riding is a continuous learning process. Even experienced riders encounter challenging situations that test their skills. I, for instance, have been actively riding since 2019, and despite my experience, there are still moments that make me pause and reflect.

In these "oh no" moments, doubts can creep in, and confidence may waver. This is where the importance of ongoing motorcycle training becomes evident. Returning to training not only reinforces the basics but also equips us with the knowledge and skills to navigate unexpected scenarios confidently.

Last April 17, I had the opportunity to participate in a one-day motocross refresher course led by renowned coach Sam Tolentino. This experience not only allowed me to finetune my techniques but also put my new MX-9 MIPS, another of Bell's innovations, to the test.

Having had great experiences with my Bell Bullitt, it's a no-brainer for me to trust my safety with the MX-9 MIPS. As I did my laps, I noticed how lightweight it was. Though polycarbonate shells are not as lightweight as carbon fiber shells, this 1,533 gram helmet felt much lighter when worn.

True to its size chart, it looked proportional to the size of my body. I've had other helmets before that made me look like a bobblehead, but thankfully, this offroad helmet is not one of them. Also, the ample padding provided a snug fit, but not so snug that I felt added pressure around the sides of my head. It wasn't too tight nor too loose; just comfortable enough to feel protected.

Feeling sweaty inside my head due to the hot weather, both the velocity flow ventilation and quick-drying interior padding helped manage the heat inside the helmet, while the silver lining aided in odor control.

Lastly, one of the most important and recently added features of this helmet is the MIPS or multidirectional impact protection system. This technology, widely used in cycle helmets, is now being introduced to motorcycle helmets. According to its website, MIPS is a movable plastic liner between the helmet's EPS inner shell designed to move slightly in the event of an impact. The system is designed to help redirect the rotational motion away from the head, thus reducing the risk of brain injury.

Overall, this is a great helmet for its price point. With a variety of designs and graphics to choose from, you can get it for only P7,590 from Dan's PH.
