"Boys Over Flowers" Actor Kim Hyun Joong Shares His Journey as a New Farmer

Ever wondered what your favorite old-school K-drama stars are up to now? Some may have stayed in the spotlight, while others kept a more low-key lifestyle—and sometimes, a little bit of both! Take Boys Over Flowers and Playful Kiss star Kim Hyun Joong for example, who has leaned into the ways of rural life by trying out farming.

In his YouTube series No Solid Answers, Kim Hyun Joong dabbled with his new rural pastime. The vlog series’ first episode recounts that the actor bought land in 2007 worth 200 million Korean won, which was approximately P10.5 million at that time. Admitting that this felt like a "scam" in hindsight, Hyun Joong noted that no one was interested in the land enough to buy it from him, given that it was a strip of land snug between other properties.

With the market value dropping and upon consulting real estate agents, Hyun Joong opted to use it for farming to turn it into an income-generating property.

During the course of the vlog series, the actor geared up for his new-found activity, mentioning that he was prepping it for retirement by planting produce like corn. Hyun Joong got hands-on with the activity, sowing seeds and rigorously plowing.

"Rural life that started somehow," the actor wrote in his Instagram post, where he shared snaps of his agricultural ventures. "My sincere respect to those who are engaged in agriculture (...) When the corn is grown, I will give it out to my subscribers. Lol"

The 37-year-old actor made his name in the industry as a member of the boy group SS501, while his star further catapulted with his roles in the 2009 K-drama hit Boys Over Flowers, where he played Yoon Ji-hoo opposite Lee Min Ho’s Gu Jun-pyo and Ku Hye Sun’s Geum Jan-di. In 2010, he led the drama Playful Kiss, which he co-starred with Jung So Min.
