(SPOT.ph)It all started with a camera bag. "In 2013, we had the idea of producing and selling a locally made camera bag that stood out in both look and texture," say Gouache founders Annand Louie Poco. Their items go beyond those that you can see online. "We chose waxed canvas and leather for their unique appeal and durability," they add. They made their samples and prototypes, had their photographer friends try them, then looked for funding for their first batch of bags after receiving positive feedback.

In an exclusive interview with SPOT.ph, Louie and Ann talk about how they craft their products, how they designed a house-turned-showroom with their artisans and clients in mind, and what's next for their brand.

How Gouache started

Louie and Ann were able to crowdsource funding for their bags through The Spark Project. They recall, "A fortunate connection introduced us to Patch Dulay, the founder of The Spark Project, our local version of Kickstarter." They posted their pitch for the product, complete with photos of their prototype bags. In just 30 days, they were able to raise around P200,000. But the initiative wasn't just about capital.

"Beyond the financial support, crowdfunding helped us validate our product, pricing, and business concept. This entire process boosted our confidence to explore more bag designs using waxed canvas." And so they started dveloping other products.

"Today, Gouache’s catalog includes camera bags, satchels, pouches, aprons, purses, totes, and many other versatile products made for those who live and thrive in the city," they share.

Gouache's new showroom and workshop in Marikina

An interactive space for makers and clients

"At Gouache, we've always dreamed of creating a beautiful and creative workspace for our makers, alongside a retail space to showcase their craftsmanship to clients and visitors," they share. "We envisioned an environment where clients can interact and consult with makers, and where makers can see firsthand how their work is appreciated and styled by our customers. This interaction fosters a deeper connection between the creators and the end-users, enriching the entire creative process."

They've brought their vision to life with the brightly lit space adorned with their leather goods. Just from the entrance alone, you can already see a sneak peek of their products on the wall. "This space also serves as our studio, welcoming clients who want to experience our bags in person after seeing them online. We believe that the tactile experience of feeling the texture of our waxed canvas and leather is crucial in appreciating the quality and craftsmanship of our products."

Aside from their customers who buy products for personal use, they also offer bulk buying to B2B clients who can now go to the showroom to check out how they want to design their pieces. "We understand that custom orders require detailed discussions to ensure every specification is met, and our new space is perfect for these consultations as we can immediately show them available swatches and prototypes of similar work we have done in the past."

Designing the space

If their workshop feels like it gives off a cozy vibe, that's because it actually used to be a residential house that they "transformed into a semi-commercial space." They explain, "We specifically wanted to lease a standalone property to create a homey feel for our team and visitors. The large frontage and ample parking space were added bonuses."

The creative direction for the space was similar to that of their products. "Just like our process for designing our bags, we approached the design of our showroom and workshop with a focus on needs and functionality. For the workshop, we first mapped out the production process to ensure a smooth workflow within the space." With that in mind, they organized the storage of their tools and raw materials based on how they're used.

Whereas others might see the space's natural light as just an aesthetic, it was actually a conscious choice with a purpose. "We also wanted to invest in a studio with plenty of natural light and a green backyard to create an optimal, joyful work environment. Natural light not only enhances the workspace aesthetically but also boosts productivity and creativity." They even have an open space at the back where their team can unwind and enjoy recreational activities during their breaks.

As for the storefront, they share, "We drew inspiration from the 1920s color palette and design elements. We felt this style would highlight the texture and vintage vibe of our waxed canvas bags beautifully, creating an inviting and charming atmosphere for our customers."

In the heart of Marikina

Even their workshop's location in Marikina was also well-thought-of. "We chose Marikina for our new space because it is close to our community of makers and suppliers. Marikina is renowned as the local hub of shoe and bag craftsmanship, with a rich heritage of artisanal skills passed down through generations," they share.

"Our location near the lively Gil Fernando Avenue places us in a creative neighborhood that is rapidly evolving with its mix of eateries, live music venues, and family-owned businesses." The creative and vibrant energy they've deliberately surrounded themselves with inspires their practical designs.

As they take inspiration from Marikina, they're determined to give back just as much to the city. "We are excited for our store and workshop to contribute to Marikina’s unique charm and treasures. Our presence in this area not only strengthens our connection with the local community but also allows us to play a part in its growth and development. We look forward to welcoming clients, visitors, and collaborators to our new space, where they can witness the dedication that goes into every Gouache product."

At the end of the day—and products made—they go back to why they started in the first place. "Our mission has always been to create beautiful, functional products that bring joy to their owners and pride to their makers."
