Summer Solstice Is Here With the Longest Day of 2024

(SPOT.ph)Metro Manila is currently experiencing its longest day and shortest night today as we welcome the start of the summer solstice, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

This means 13 hours of daylight on Friday, June 21, with the sun rising at 5:28 a.m. and setting at 6:28 p.m.—which also happens to be the exact same time and day as the longest day in 2023.

In 2021 and 2022, the longest daytime during Metro Manila's summer solstice was recorded at 12 hours and 59 minutes, just a few seconds short of reaching 13 hours.

What is summer solstice?

The summer solstice is an annual astronomical event that marks the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, usually taking place on June 21 or June 22. Scientifically, it occurs when the Earth's axial tilt is at its maximum, causing the sun to reach its highest point in the sky. This results in the longest day of the year with extended daylight hours.

PAGASA's astronomical diary puts the exact beginning of summer solstice at 4:51 a.m. on June 21: "On this day, the Sun reaches its highest northern position in the sky, in the constallation of Cancer at a declination of 23.5°N."

Many cultures around the world celebrate the summer solstice, often with ceremonies, festivals, and communal gatherings. It represents a time of renewal, growth, and the peak of the sun's power. In Metro Manila, it will likely be another day in the sweltering heat of the sun—just with a few added minutes.
