Judy Ann: Being Strict, Doesn't Mean You Don't Trust Your Child

Judy Ann: Being Strict, Doesn't Mean You Don't Trust Your Child

As a parent, you’ve probably been asked at least once, "Strikto ka ba?"

If you asked Judy Ann Santos that question, her answer would be a definitive "Yes!" But, what does it really mean to be a strict parent? And is it a bad thing or a good thing to be strict with your children?

Judy Ann Admits She’s The Strict One

In the latest upload on her YouTube channel, Judy Ann’s Kitchen, the 42-year-old actress admits that between her and her husband, Ryan Agoncillo, she’s the strict parent.

In the YouTube video, where Judy Ann was sharing a dorm- or condo-friendly recipe, she also talked about her 19-year-old daughter Yohan not living in a dorm setup.

The mom of three said it was non-negotiable to her to have an uwian set-up now that the her eldest is pursuing her college studies."Pwede ka mag-aral kahit san mo gusto anak, basta uuwi ka, hatid-sundo," she said. This is when Judy Ann admits, "Yes, ako po ang strikto samin."

Judy Ann also shared that she’s the one who usually makes the parenting decisions when it comes to Yohan but she also takes Ryan’s advice. She acknowledges that Ryan had more experience being outgoing in his younger years.

On being a strict parent, Judy Ann emphasizes the importance of laying out rules for children. But she makes an important disclaimer: putting these rules in place doesn’t mean you don’t trust your child.

"Kailangan kasi maglatag ng rules. It doesn’t mean that you don’t trust your child. But you’re setting the rules and kailangan masunod muna ‘yon," she explains.

Being A Strict Parent: Finding the Right Balance

Being a parent of course you want what’s only the best for your children. However, finding the balance between guiding our children down the right path and being overbearing can be challenging.

Here are three tips to help you set boundaries and rules grow up to be responsible and well-rounded individuals without risking you being too limiting.

Communicate Openly

Open communication is the cornerstone of any healthy relationship, especially between parents and children. Make sure to explain the reasons behind the rules you set. For instance, if you set a curfew, explain that it's for their safety and your peace of mind.

As we all know, communication is two-way. So, be open when your child expresses their concerns or resistance to following a certain rule. Involving your child in the rule-making process can make them feel valued and respected. It also increases the likelihood that they will follow the rules.

Set Realistic Expectations

It's important to set rules that are realistic and achievable. Unrealistic expectations can lead to frustration and rebellion. Understand your child's capabilities and circumstances and set rules that challenge them but are still within their reach.

Life is unpredictable, and sometimes rules need to be adjusted. Be open to discussing and revising rules as your child grows and their needs change. This flexibility shows that you are understanding and willing to work with them.

Be Consistent

Consistency is key when it comes to enforcing rules. If you set a rule, make sure to stick to it. Inconsistency can confuse children and make them test boundaries more often.

When it comes to being a strict parent, it’s better to remember the saying, "Lahat ng sobra, nakakasama."
