'Pulang Araw' Is Going Worldwide After Best Telenovela Nomination

When it comes to discussions about the quality and value of Filipino telenovelas, opinions are often split. Support is limited and criticisms are widespread. Some people mistakenly believe that Filipino telenovelas don't have what it takes to succeed on the global stage. But it's time to leave that outdated (not to mention colonial!) mindset behind—especially when GMA 7’s Pulang Araw is breaking barriers.

The show recently earned a nomination for Best Telenovela at the Venice TV Awards 2024. This achievement is taking Filipino storytelling beyond borders and showcasing its potential on the world stage. "Mabuhay ang galing ng Pilipino!" GMA Network captioned their post. "#PulangAraw received a nomination for the Best Soap/Telenovela from the Venice TV Award 2024!" it shared.

ICYDK, Pulang Araw was the only project from the Philippines to be nominated across 19 categories at the Venice TV Awards. The Venice TV Awards was established to honor and celebrate television, aiming to "boost both national and international recognition for producers and broadcasters who create high-quality content."

Though Portugal’s Lady of Tides won in the Best Telenovela category, we couldn't be prouder that Filipino talent is finally receiving the recognition it deserves on the global stage!

Pulang Araw Cast And Plot

Pulang Araw is a fictional historical series that focuses on the American and Japanese Occupation of the Philippines during World War II in the 1940s. Starring David Licauco, Barbie Forteza, Sanya Lopez, and Alden Richards, the drama tells the story of Filipinos who fought and sacrificed for their country's freedom during one of the toughest times in Philippine history.

What makes the the show powerful is its focus not just on well-known historical figures, but also on the everyday people who contributed to the fight for freedom.
