Toyota unveils Corolla Cross Hydrogen Concept

TOYOTA Motor Philippines (TMP) recently unveiled the Corolla Cross H2 Concept, a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine vehicle (HICEV) developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing in Japan. This concept is part of Toyota's commitment to developing sustainable fuel solutions as it aims to take a lead for a cleaner future in transportation.

The Philippine media had the opportunity to experience the Corolla Cross H2 firsthand at an exclusive ride-and-drive event at the Toyota Manila Bay dealership. The event, held alongside the Philippine International Motor Show, allowed journalists to witness the vehicle's unique capabilities and performance.

At the event, TMP First Vice President for Corporate Affairs Josephine Villanueva spoke about Toyota's stance on carbon neutrality. She highlighted Toyota's mission, called "Achieving Zero," aiming to address societal and environmental challenges, ultimately reducing negative impacts to zero.

TMP Vice President for Marketing Services Elvin Luciano elaborated on Toyota's multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality, including a range of green technologies. He discussed Toyota's focus on mass and accessible electrification, covering battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and more efficient internal combustion engines powered by biofuel or compressed natural gas.

One of the highlights of the event was the demonstration of the Corolla Cross H2's quick refueling process using a specialized hydrogen refueling station imported from Malaysia. Unlike electric vehicles that often require hours to recharge, the Corolla Cross H2 refuels in about five minutes, presenting hydrogen as a practical and efficient fuel choice for the future.The Corolla Cross H2 is equipped with a 1.6-liter, 3-cylinder turbocharged engine running on high-pressure hydrogen direct injection, delivering the power and responsiveness familiar to traditional combustion engines, but without carbon dioxide emissions. The hydrogen fuel tanks, strategically positioned under the rear seat and in the luggage area, optimize space while ensuring safety with high-pressure containment.The Corolla Cross H2's dynamic feel and mechanical feedback set it apart from the quiet, smooth experience of fully electric vehicles, appealing to drivers who enjoy the sound and tactile engagement of an internal combustion engine.
