Comelec grants accreditation of Mamamayang Liberal as party-list
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has granted accreditation to Mamamayang Liberal (ML) as a party-list group, making it eligible to bid for a seat in the House of Representatives as a party-list representative in the 2025 elections.
ML represents workers, farmers, fisherfolk, indigenous peoples, urban poor, women, youth, professionals, and members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community.
In a July 3 resolution, the Comelec en banc said ML's representation of diverse sectors aligns with the Supreme Court decision that the party-list system should not be narrowly construed since each of these sectors, despite their unique attributes and characteristics, shares a common aspiration to pursue social justice and advance their causes.
"By seeking to represent these varied sectors, the Petitioner (Mamamayang Liberal) underscores the interconnected nature of their advocacies, addressing labor rights, agricultural support, cultural preservation, urban social services, gender equality, youth empowerment, professional expertise, and LGBT rights. The petitioner was able to explain why it seeks to represent multiple sectors, emphasizing that while each sector is bound by its distinct attributes, they are united by their common goal of social justice," the Comelec said.
"Given that the party-list system is inherently a system of presentation, it is logical, if not necessary, for these sectors to band together," it added.
Mamamayang Liberal is represented by its president, former Ifugao Representative Teodoro Baguilat Jr., and its secretary general, Jobelle Joan Domingo.
"This (Mamamayang Liberal) coalition ensures that they represent a sizable multisectoral constituency, enhancing their chances of winning a seat in Congress and effectively advocating for their collective interests. Thus, after a judicious review of the Petition, the Commission (En Banc) finds that Mamamayang Liberal complied with the requirements of pertinent laws and rules to entitle it to be registered as a regional sectoral organization under the party-list system of representation," the Comelec said.
"Wherefore, premises considered, the Commission (En Banc) resolves to grant the petition of Mamamayang Liberal as a regional sectoral organization. Further, Mamamayang Liberal is hereby declared eligible to participate under the party-list of representation," it added.
The filing of candidacy for the May 2025 polls is set on the first week of October this year. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
