What exactly did the journalist ask President Ruto?
Following the president's address to the nation on Wednesday, June 26, TV 47 journalist Elizabeth Mutuku asked President Ruto how he plans to ensure the country secures developments despite budget cuts.
"How do we move forward with the budget cuts especially now that you've said we are going to have austerity measures but how then do we secure developments?" Mutuku questioned.
MPs seated behind President Ruto immediately burst into laughter upon hearing Mutuku's question.
Some MPs were overheard asking where the money would come from after Kenyans rejected the Finance Bill 2024.
"Si mlikataa, mlikataa...maendeleo gani?(You refused, you refused. What developments are you speaking of)," MPs were heard sarcastically asking.
President Ruto is heard attempting to calm the laughing MPs, assuring them that the journalist's question was valid.
How did President Ruto respond to Mutuku's question?
In response to Mutuku's question, President Ruto stated that, with the Finance Bill 2024 rejected by Kenyans, the country must cut down on development projects.
"Some of the development programs amounting to KSh 200 billion we will have to cut down, to delay them. They'll have to wait some of them for next year."
He further mentioned that some development projects would have to be canceled due to the limited funds available after the rejection of the Bill by Kenyans.
"It is because the people of Kenya have spoken loudly, that they want a leaner budget for us as a country."
