Beatrice Chebet produced an outstanding performance to win the women's 5000m final and deliver Kenya's first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Chebet clocked 14:28.56 after outsprinting her compatriot Faith Kipyegon, who took silver. '
Chebet will also receive a handsome cheque for her gold medal, which could be two if she wins the 10,000m.
Kipyegon, Gudaf Tsegay, and defending champion Sifan Hassan were the favourites to win, but Chebet headed into the race with a consistent run and a world record in the 10,000m.
She was comfortable throughout the race amid Kipyegon's tussle with Tsegay that saw the Kenyan disqualified and later reinstated, per Olympics.com.
Chebet finished behind Kipyegon and Hassan at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest
Chebet will run in the 10,000m final set for Friday, August 9. Kenya has never won a gold medal in the distance and history beckons for Chebet.
Chebet's earnings for 5000m gold
World Athletics introduced prize money for gold medallists in each of the 48 athletics events at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Track and field athletes will share a $2.4 million prize pool received from the International Olympic Committee’s revenue share allocation.
Therefore, Chebet will get $50,000, which translates to 6.5 million Kenya shillings. According to Nation Sports, gold medalists will be rewarded with Ksh3 million, meaning the 24-year-old will pocket around Ksh10 million.
Mary Moraa wins bronze
TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that Mary Moraa won a bronze medal in the women's 800m, which Great Britain's Keely Hodgkinson won.
Moraa was the favourite to win and headed to the Olympics as the world champion but faded in the final 100m as Hodgkinson and Tsige Duguma overtook her.
