The three biggest lies Trump told in the debate
Former US President Donald Trump has been caught in quite a few lies in recent years. And even during the first major debate with his Democratic opponent, he repeatedly took a run at the truth. Here we list for you the three biggest untruths Trump told during the debate.
'Abortion after 9 months'
Donald Trump, now already 78 years old, again claimed that in Democratically governed states abortions occur in the ninth month of pregnancy. Trump spoke the following words, “A Democratic governor said, ‘The baby will be born, and we will decide then.’ In other words, we will then execute the baby,” it sounded. But that would amount to infanticide, and that, of course, is illegal in all 50 U.S. states. Less than one percent of abortions in the U.S. are performed after 21 weeks of pregnancy, and this is almost always done in medical emergencies or in cases of fetal abnormalities. So Trump's words do not add up.
'Crime increased under Biden'
Trump claimed that crime in the U.S. “increased tremendously” during Joe Biden's presidency. But that too turns out to be untrue. On the contrary! Crime actually decreased during Biden's presidency. Indeed, data from the FBI show that violent crime peaked during the 2020 corona pandemic (under Trump), and continued to decline steadily thereafter. The number of violent crimes fell 6 percent in 2023, and another 15 percent in the first quarter of 2024.
'Immigrants are taking over our cities'
Trump habitually made populist statements about immigration several times during the debate. For example, he said that illegal immigrants are “taking over our cities” and “committing violence there,” but in reality, crime is falling in the United States, and illegal immigrants are actually committing fewer crimes than average.
