In Dresden’s Altstadt, enjoy a Baroque tour through Germany’s answer to Florence
What gives the historic centre of Dresden its inimitable atmosphere? No doubt its cobbled streets where the Baroque architecture is as exceptional as the other cultural treasures that make Dresden so appealing.
Bordered by the Elbe, Dresden's old town, a model of Baroque craftsmanship, offers beautiful sights on every corner. Dominated by the Semperoper, one of the most famous opera houses in the whole of Germany, and the Frauenkirche, Dresden's landmark cathedral crowned by its impressive dome, the Altstadt has a timeless beauty that has been faithfully preserved through the ages. Etched in the building facades is a tale of resistance and renaissance. The edifices, made of sandstone from Saxon Switzerland, have acquired a patina with the passing of time, which only seems to amplify their sense of majesty.
Be sure to visit the Zwinger, the one-time royal pavilion, and the Residenzschloss (royal palace), two of the old town's highlights, and take in unblemished views of the Elbe and the steamboats gliding across the river from the Brühlsche Terrasse, dubbed the "balcony of Europe". Whether you come and potter around its pretty streets or admire the artworks in its museums, every minute spent in the Altstadt brings you closer to the city's rich and fascinating past. A few hours is all it takes to appreciate Dresden's old town which comes into focus like a veritable visual symphony.

NewsChina: China's largest heavy ion research facility forges scientific edge
China - October 21, 2024 China's largest heavy ion research facility forges scientific edge (Voice_over) China's Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou, operated by the Institute of Modern Physics, continues playing an important role in the country's scientific research and social development. As the largest heavy ion research facility in China, the center is also one of a few large-scale full ion accelerating systems in the world which can accelerate ions from hydrogen to uranium, to high energies. The Lanzhou accelerator is also advancing the development of new crops through induced mutation... the process of using ion beams to disrupt a seed's DNA, forcing it to generate mutants with certain desirable traits, like rice that's salt-alkali tolerant. (Sound_bite) Zhou Libin, Deputy director, Biomedical Research Center, Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences: "Its mutagenic dosage and mutagenic energy are artificially adjustable. By using heavy ion beam-induced mutational breeding technology, we've obtained a new rice variety 'Dongdao 122' with high quality, high yield and salt-alkali tolerance, as well as a new low-cadmium rice variety." (Voice_over) The Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou was first established in the 1970's reaching international advanced levels of operation by 1988. Today, the center has 20 experimental terminals, with an annual experimental beam feeding time of more than 5,000 hours. [Restriction: No access Chinese mainland]

Anhui, China - October 08, 2024 In Anhui, located in eastern China, a video from October 8, 2024, captured a craftsman using multiple stamps to create a detailed landscape on a rectangular piece of white paper. Wearing plastic gloves, the craftsman carefully stamped different designs, each in a unique color. Gradually, the image formed into a beautiful scene featuring a river, a small tower, and a bridge. Some Chinese netizens wondered why the entire image wasn’t created with a single stamp. Others explained that it’s the ink pads, not the stamps, that provide the colors, and multiple stamps with varied designs are necessary to produce such a vibrant picture.
