Top 10 airlines with the worst track records for canceling flights
As the holiday travel season approaches, new data is shedding light on which airlines have the worst history when it comes to leaving passengers high and dry.
Data sourced from the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics showed one airline stuck out from the rest regarding the percentage of canceled flights.
QR Code Generator analyzed airlines' scheduled and canceled flights from August 2023 to July 2024 to come up with a list of the worst offenders.
Frontier Airlines, which was also named one of America's worst airlines earlier this year, took the top spot.
1. Frontier Airlines
Frontier Airlines topped the list this year with a 2.22 percentage of canceled flights.
The airline scheduled 200,296 flights from August 2023 to July 2024 and canceled 4,443 during that time.
The Denver, Colorado-based airline has a pattern of being ranked low on traveler satisfaction lists.
Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) also concluded in a 2024 report that Frontier Airlines had the worst ratio of complaints to passengers in 2023 based on data from the US Department of Transportation.
'We have been disappointed in our historical complaints,' a Frontier Airlines spokesperson said in an email to Forbes earlier this year.
'However, we are pleased to have seen a recent drop in complaints due to better operational reliability, the reopening of our call center and the New Frontier which offers clear, upfront low-cost pricing, and no change fees.'
2. Endeavor Air
Endeavor Air was a close second behind Frontier with a 2.21 percentage of canceled flights from August 2023 to July 2024.
The regional airline had 203,418 flights scheduled during that time period and canceled 4,491.
Endeavor Air has been 100 percent owned by Delta Air Lines since 2013.
'What's important is that our customers know Delta always has their back if a last-resort Delta or Delta Connection flight cancellation becomes necessary,' a spokesperson for Delta told Newsweek.
'Delta and its Delta Connection partners consistently lead operational performance among the largest US carriers as shown in Department of Transportation data.'
Despite the ranking, Delta claimed that Endeavor Air operated 246 days with no cancellations between August 2023 and July 2024.
3. Mesa Airlines
Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, Mesa Airlines was calculated to have a 2.10 percentage of canceled flights.
The airline scheduled 90,957 flights between August 2023 and July 2024 and canceled 1,914 during that time.
Mesa Airlines serves as a partner for United Airlines and operates under the United Express brand.
The regional airline also operated flights for American Airlines until their partnership ended in 2023.
4. GoJet Airlines
GoJet Airlines is another United Express carrier on the list with a high percentage of canceled flights.
The airline scheduled only 48,997 flights between August 2023 and July 2024 and canceled 979 during that time period.
GoJet Airlines has the lowest number of scheduled and canceled flights on the list, but the data concluded its canceled flight percentage was 2 percent.
A GoJet spokesperson told Newsweek that its 2 percent cancellation rate 'largely reflects uncontrollable factors like ATC (air traffic control) and weather, which accounted for majority of cancellations, while controllable cancellations were just 0.016 percent.'
'GoJet has been the only United Express carrier to report a zero percent cancellation rate - a milestone achieved in October 2024 thanks to our team's exceptional dedication,' the spokesperson added.
'We remain focused on providing a premium, dependable experience for our passengers and will continue to adapt our practices for the best service outcomes.'
5. CommuteAir
CommuteAir describes itself as a 'modern regional airline and United Express partner' on its website.
It also has a 1.98 percentage of canceled flights from August 2023 to July 2024.
The percentage was based on CommuteAir's 68,794 scheduled and 979 canceled flights during that period.
Despite its flight cancellation rate, several Reddit users advised travelers to fly CommuteAir over Republic Airways in a post on the social media platform this year.
Newsweek contacted a CommuteAir spokesperson, who said they 'having nothing to add' about its ranking.
5. Republic Airways
Republic Airways tied with CommuteAir in fifth place for having a 1.98 percentage in canceled flights from August 2023 to July 2024.
This regional airline scheduled 285,131 flights during that time and canceled 5,638.
Like other airlines on this list, Republic Airways flies for United Express,
It also operates for American Eagle and Delta Connection - brand names under American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
6. Alaska Airlines
Alaska Airlines scheduled 244,375 flights from August 2023 to July 2024 and canceled 4,427 of them.
Because of these stats, the airline's percentage of canceled flights finding was 1.81 percent.
A representative from Alaska Airlines explained to Newsweek that it's 'committed to caring for guests from the time they book their ticket to when they touch down - including ensuring guests reach their destinations on time.'
'This year, we have successfully completed 97.9 percent of our scheduled flights. Absent the impact of flight AS1282 [the Alaska Airlines flight that saw a section of its fuselage break off mid-flight] and the grounding of our aircraft this January, our year-to-date completion rate would be 99.34 percent,' the representative added.
7. Spirit Airlines
Spirit Airlines landed a 1.63 percentage of cancelled flights from August 2023 to July 2024 this year.
The airline scheduled 268,322 during that time period and canceled 4,386.
Spirit Airlines has been known for its frequent flight cancellations, and a 2024 study from NerdWallet concluded it canceled 1.70 percent of its flights in 2023.
The Florida-based airline has also found itself in the news after its decision to cut 24 different flight routes over the next few months.
'We routinely evaluate our network and make adjustments to support the company's business strategy based on current market and operating conditions,' a Spirit spokesperson told Travel + Leisure.
'As part of this process, we updated our upcoming schedule to focus on our strongest performing routes.'
8. United Airlines
United Airlines scheduled the highest number of flights on this year's list from August 2023 to July 2024.
The airline scheduled 747,315 flights and canceled 11,578, making its percentage of canceled flights 1.55.
United Airlines was also ranked number four on the top 10 list of airline cancellations between October 27 and November 3, 2024.
Out of its 50,399 scheduled flights during that time, 158 were canceled, making that week's percentage rate 0.31 percent, according to USA Today.
Like CommuteAir, a representative from United Airlines told Newsweek they do not 'have anything to add' regarding the data.
9. PSA Airlines
PSA Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines, has a 1.46 percentage of canceled flights from August 2023 to July 2024.
It also cracked the top 10 number of airline cancellations from October 27 to November 3, 2024, canceling 16 of its 12,760.
10. JetBlue Airlines
JetBlue Airlines' percentage of canceled flights from August 2023 to July 2024 was 1.42 based on the recent data.
During that time period, JetBlue had 250,887 scheduled flights, and 3,569 ended up being canceled.
The Office of Aviation Consumer Protection also concluded that only 60.75 percent of JetBlue flights may arrive on time this holiday season.
JetBlue has a history of flight cancellations and ranked second on NerdWallet's list of the highest percentage of canceled flights in 2023.
On the bright side, JetBlue was ranked the second highest in customer satisfaction for first class and business segment in the JD Power 2024 North America Airline Satisfaction Study.

China - November 27, 2024 Farming tradition meets innovation in China's vegetable heartland (Voice_over) From purple sprouting broccoli to tomatoes on the vine. This annual vegetable fair is a one-stop shop for China's agricultural traditions and innovations. (Sound_bite) Zhang Fuguang, Worker, Yurun Mengyang Vegetable Market: "Traditional broccoli is round and compact. This is a newly developed variety. It can be eaten raw because it's green and natural." (Voice_over) Location - Pengzhou, a small city on the Chengdu Plain - a historic agricultural hub, and now, one of China's major vegetable bases. The city has a cultivation area of more than 500 square kilometers, yielding an annual output of more than two million tons. (Sound_bite) Tao Yuan, Reporter: "Vegetables here don't just stay in the farmland. The city has partnered with leading agricultural research institutions to develop new varieties in the lab." (Voice_over) This laboratory is designed to support the high-quality development of the Pengzhou vegetable industry. Researchers here are working to tackle key challenges, such as food safety and the effect of climate change. (Sound_bite) Song Zhanfeng, Director, Vegetable Research Center, Horticulture Institute of Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences: "In recent years, what we've observed most frequently is the irregularity of high temperatures, low temperatures, and rainfall. This lack of pattern in the climate makes it difficult for scientists to conduct research and for local farmers to grow crops. Without a predictable pattern, it's hard to manage things properly. Such environmental changes affect plant growth significantly." (Voice_over) This study is focuses on stress resistance, developing crops that can thrive under extreme weather conditions, such as high and low temperatures, excessive rainfall, or water scarcity. The goal is to identify and enhance the genetic traits that make these crops more resilient. (Sound_bite) Song Zhanfeng, Director, Vegetable Research Center, Horticulture Institute of Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences: "We artificially create a high-temperature or low-temperature environment for it to grow in. Then we observe how it performs in those conditions. After that, we conduct genetic modification and run tests to see whether it expresses the desired traits. Once successful, we apply this technology to our vegetable varieties." (Voice_over) A testament to how science and innovation can shape the future of one of humanity's oldest industries.
