Green light: Ukraine to strike Russian territory with US missiles
Ukraine to use US long-range weapons for limited strikes inside Russia, in response to North Korea's deployment of thousands of troops to support Moscow's war effort.
The easing of restrictions allowing Kiev to use the army's tactical missile system (ATACMS) to strike targets inside Russia is a major US policy reversal, and comes as some 10,000 elite North Korean troops have been sent to Kursk, a region of Russia along Ukraine's northern border, to help Moscow's forces retake territory conquered by Ukraine.
The Biden administration fears that more North Korean special forces units will be brought in to support this effort.
For Ukrainian President, Zelensky, this is the culmination of repeated requests to the USA and NATO:
“Today, the media are talking a lot about the fact that we have received approval for corresponding actions. But strikes are not made in words. Such things are not announced. The missiles will speak for themselves. That's for sure. Glory to Ukraine”, stressed the President on X.
This announcement comes shortly before Joe Biden's departure from the White House, and the return of Donald Trump, who is highly critical of American aid to Ukraine. Kiev fears that the future president will cut off the funding it receives, essential for its war effort, or try to force Ukraine into an agreement with Russia.
