NewsNetherlands: Robot Bird Flies Without Tailfin, Could Revolutionize Aviation
Groningen, Netherlands - November 21, 2024 In a groundbreaking experiment, a robotic bird has successfully flown without a vertical tailfin, mimicking the flight mechanics of real birds and potentially revolutionizing the future of aviation. Developed by David Lentink, Professor of Biomimetics at the University of Groningen, the robotic pigeon uses real pigeon feathers and advanced algorithms to replicate how birds continuously adjust the shape of their wings and tails during flight. This natural adaptation allows birds to fly without the need for a stabilizing vertical tailfin, a feat the aviation industry has long struggled to replicate. Lentink’s robotic bird, named PigeonBot II, was tested in a wind tunnel and flown autonomously in open air, confirming the idea proposed by German scientist Franz Groebbels in 1929. The innovative design, which mimics bird-like reflexes to maintain stability, could lead to the development of more fuel-efficient airplanes with reduced radar signatures, a concept already visualized by the European Airbus group. This breakthrough opens the door to not only more efficient aircraft but potentially improved stealth capabilities for military operations as well.
