Rasmus Hojlund has posted a lengthy message to fans on Instagram after Denmark were knocked out of Euro 2024 by Germany on Saturday night.

After a first half that saw play suspended for 20 minutes due to heavy rain, thunder and lightning, the game sparked into life after the break, with Joachim Andersen believing he had given Denmark the lead only for his goal to be ruled out for a marginal offside.

Moments later, he was penalised for handball in the penalty area and Kai Havertz stepped up to give Germany the lead from the spot, before Jamal Musiala put the result beyond doubt.

Hojlund was competing at his first Euros and failed to find the net in his four appearances. Reflecting on his tournament, the Manchester United striker admitted to feeling 'a bit guilty' after his team's exit.

'To be honest I didn't really know what to expect from my first Euros,' Hojlund's Instagram post began.

'Supporting Denmark during a tournament was always one of the highlights as a Dane, playing for Denmark was indescribable. I was so eager, and wanted so badly to make our country proud. I texted one of my friends that I felt a bit guilty.

'It's a weird sentimental mix, because there's also pride. Obviously we wanted to bring the cup home, but the thing that will always bring me pride, both as a footballer and a Dane.'

He finished his message in Danish, with the translation reading: 'We are red we are white. We stand together, side by side.'

Denmark's defeat was particularly heartbreaking for the side due to the two controversial decisions that went against them in a matter of seconds.

Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand slammed VAR after the match and called for technology to be improved, while captain Kasper Schmeichel claimed a lack of 'common sense' from officials cost his team.

Hojlund refused to offer any excuses for Denmark's loss, but it is unsurprising that he is disappointed after failing to score in Germany.

The 21-year-old arrived off the back of his first season at Old Trafford where he scored 16 goals in 43 matches.

Those numbers appear reasonable for a young forward at a new club, but he did endure multiple barren spells during the campaign, and he looked off the pace at the Euros as Denmark failed to repeat their semi-final run of 2021.
